7.3 Here is climate change

The passage from 2002 to 2003 brought a radical change in the climate situation. In fact, many researchers had been talking about "climate change" since the previous decade, but the majority of producers only noticed it that year.
Hot vintages over time had already occurred on the hills of Langa and Roero. Many remembered 1997, which had amazed for the majesty of the structures and alcohol levels above the norm. But 2003 as a meteorological vintage was truly something else and marked over time the change in attitude that winegrowers had to maintain in their relationship with the vineyard and its cultivation. Record heat and drought were the salient features of that vintage, situations so drastic as to clearly influence the evolution of the vineyard.
A situation completely opposite to 2002, when rains had marked long periods of the year. In 2003, heat and dry translated into a decided precocity of ripening. And this precocity occurred throughout the vegetative cycle of the vintage, starting from flowering and fruit set. "I remember that summer a bit like a nightmare. That season was also very hot, almost unbearable. – Luciano reflects thoughtfully – We had to face problems of stress on the plants. The excess of heat and dry also interfered in the ripening of the bunches. We were not prepared to manage such an extreme situation and therefore in a short time we had to face many problems, in particular the first sunburns on the bunches especially in the vineyards where – in view of the harvest – the traditional thinning of the leaves had been practiced, without thinking about the effects that such an aggressive sun would have had on the berries. But we learned quickly and so in the following years we would no longer be caught by surprise".
