Chapter 11

Memories of Barbara

I miss everything about Luciano, even his silences

Born in 1970, on 3 October, in the midst of harvest time, Barbara witnessed entirely the development of the family business, from when the structure was taking its first steps in the garage of the home until the new cellar in Via Pugnane was built at the end of the Nineties. It was a crescendo of commitment, involvement, experiences. It is as though she had lived twice: between perfecting her English in England and working as cabin crew for the airline Air Europe, the experience as an employee in an important legal office in Milan, and the definitive return to Barolo for a return to the family business as much desired as it was anticipated.

"Luciano, my father, was not an expansive person, but in terms of sincerity and affection he was second to none. – Barbara begins thus in telling of her father – There were signs of character, but also the effects of a life that had not been easy, beginning from the childhood years. I was born in 1970 and he in 1946, there was a quarter of a century between us, but it seemed as though not even a year had passed. Everything was as in his day, when he was a child and a boy and patriarchy was dominant. Perhaps it was also influenced by that withdrawn character of his, somewhat closed, as though he always lived with the brakes on" .

Perhaps he wanted a boy as his first child?

"I don't think that was the reason for such energetic rigour. He had it in his blood from a personal experience that had shown him only that side of the coin. Also for this reason he worked so much. He wanted his family to want for nothing. And so my life at home was often with my mother, while he had work that kept him busy, when he didn't have two or even more jobs simultaneously" .

Some affectionate gestures...

In his own way he knew how to make amends and give us moments of warmth and humanity. I have many memories in this regard. In particular, I like to return to 1978: I had had a serious accident.

The wines conceived by Luciano

Analysing the production, including the current one, of Casa Sandrone, many wonder why so few wines are produced and why among them there is not even a white wine.
