10.1 Reserved yes, but surly absolutely not

As a young man, Luciano was very reserved, perhaps even a little shy, and this made him appear aloof. It was an attitude that was disorienting and gave the impression that he was a difficult person to involve. But it was a superficial impression, which did not correspond to the truth.
As the years went by, as often happens, his character softened a bit, even if those who met him for the first time saw him as a bit surly. In reality he was – as they say – a heart of gold.
“For those like me who were close to him, he had no secrets. – recalls Mariuccia – It was enough for me to look at his face or his way of walking to understand his state of mind. If he walked briskly then he was calm; if he had an uncertain step, some problem was bothering him. If his gaze was bright, then everything was going smoothly. If he was perplexed or had «sij ëncrusià» (crossed eyebrows) as they say in these parts, then something was tormenting him. It was especially the construction of the new winery in Barolo that caused him so much worry. «We went from a garage to a real winery» he loved to say. The financial commitment had been high and, even though the decision had been made in full harmony, I understood that it kept him anxious. «What if we have bitten off more than we can chew...» he would say every now and then, but then he would correct himself: «If we don't make it, there are no problems. At most the bank will take everything back and we will return to what we were before starting the work... in the garage», but in my heart I knew he said it to reassure us”.
